The CDC says most nursing home workers across the country are vaccinated, but not in Georgia.

MARSHALLVILLE, Georgia – The number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise again, bringing attention back to healthcare workers, including those in nursing homes.

The CDC says most nursing home workers across the country are vaccinated, but not in Georgia.

Oaks Nursing Home, at this time, will not need vaccines for long-term healthcare workers in their facility.

“I knew that if I had never had these pictures, I wouldn’t be able to see my mother again and give her a hug,” said Terri Starling.

Terri Starling’s mother lives at the Oaks in Marshallville and says getting the vaccine was obvious to her.

A year ago, her mother was in an assisted living facility with COPD.

“When we finally took her to the doctor in March, she could barely breathe. She couldn’t stop coughing. I didn’t think she was going to be okay – she was so sick,” Starling said. .

Now Starling is hoping everyone gets vaccinated, including healthcare workers.

But Kathy Baugh, director of nursing at The Oaks, said the industry is facing a workforce crisis.

“We have to accept that some of the staff choose not to, whether it is their religion or whether they are afraid of it. They have all seen us survive by getting the vaccine, but for some people it is not. just wasn’t enough to get vaccinated. “

More than three-quarters of their staff are now vaccinated, nearly double the state average, but they do not require staff members to get vaccinated.

Starling says being able to kiss her mother and visit her in person made all the difference.

“I couldn’t be in a better place. She loves it here. She’s happy – she can now physically walk to the dining room. I never dreamed that she would be able to do that. when we first brought her here, ”Starling said.

100% of patients at The Oaks nursing home are vaccinated.
